11 Easy, Natural Life Extenders

This article was originally published by our friend Dr. Axe

You may not waking up about life extenders, but I’m here to tell you that they’re easier to work into your day than you’d  think. While we still haven’t managed to invent a potion that will keep us all looking and feeling young forever, there are ways to increase our longevity. Whether it’s taking a walk in the park, eating something spicy or helping others, you’ll be surprised by the easy life extenders you can start tapping into today.

Easy, Natural Life Extenders

#1. Spending Time in Nature

Going for a walk in green spaces can actually help you live longer. A recent study found that women who lived in areas with lots of green space nearby reduced their risk of death by 12 percent. (1) Living longer wasn’t the only benefit, either. The researchers noted that spending time in green spaces also increased social engagement, which improves relationships and makes us happier.  and physical activity, while improving mental health — all great reasons to put down the smartphone and enjoy some time outdoors.

If you live in a concrete jungle, simply having a view of green space can boost your mood, whether or not you take a stroll. (2) Office workers who enjoyed a forest view were found to have greater job satisfaction and less stress than those without a green view. Because stress takes an enormous toll on our bodies, tapping into ways to bust stress is always wise.

#2. The Right Diet

Changing your diet is one of the simplest and most rewarding life extenders. Science shows us that several diets tend to increase life expectancy, so you’re likely to find one that you enjoy. The Blue Zones diet, for instance, takes its cues from several regions of the world with the longest-living people and focuses on eating fresh, whole foods, dairy and fermented foods like kefir and natto.

The Okinawa diet, named after the people of the Japanese island Okinawa, which boasts some of the oldest inhabitants in the world, focuses on eating a variety of colorful fruits and veggies. With the exception of high-quality meats and seafood on occasion, the Okinawa diet is mostly plant based and limits grains and dairy. Researchers believe that one of the reason Okinawans live so long is their attitude towards food. They follow a philosophy that translates to “eat until you are eight parts out of ten full.”

The Mediterranean diet is also associated with a longer lifespan, likely because it’s packed with anti-inflammatory foods that protect against a variety of diseases, including heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Veggies, fruits, nuts, healthy fats like olive oil, high-quality dairy and even red wine are staples of the Mediterranean diet.

What these diets all have in common are that they’re largely plant-based. And when meat and seafood are eaten, it’s recommended that they be the best quality possible and enjoyed in moderation: organic, free-range and grass-fed are what you want to aim for on these diets.

So if these diets are proven to be life extenders, which foods should you steer clear of? I recommend avoiding canola oil, which is almost always genetically modified and a partially hydrogenated oil; pork and processed meats like bacon and sausage, which can increase your cancer risk; shrimp nutrition, which often includes antibiotic drugs and illegal chemicals; and farm-raised tilapia, which are loaded with cancer-causing pollutants, antibiotics and pesticides.

#3. Exercise (You don’t have to run fast! In fact, maybe don’t.)

After a tough workout, you might yourself wondering if the muscle pain and soreness is worth it. It turns out, if you were playing a racquet sport, swimming, doing aerobics or cycling, you’re likely extending your life. (3)

A study of more than 80,000 adults found that these four activities offered life-saving benefits — the risk of death from any cause, for instance, was 47 percent lower among adults who play a sport like tennis or badminton, while the risk of death from cardiovascular disease was a whopping 56 percent lower among people who played racquet sports. According to the study authors, “it’s not only how much and how often, but also what type of exercise you do that seems to make the difference.”

Strength training is another one of my favorite life extenders. One study found that older adults who strength trained at least twice a week decreased their risk of death by any cause by 46 percent; they also had a 41 percent lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease and a 19 percent lower risk of dying from cancer. (4)

While researchers aren’t exactly sure what it is about strength training that increases longevity, the study did find that people who strength trained were more likely to have a normal body weight, to partake in aerobic activity, as well, and tend to keep away from alcohol and tobacco, which could also impact lifespans positively.

If running is more your style, take comfort knowing that you don’t have to be fast for it to act as a life extender. In fact, running slowly might help you live longer. A Danish study found that joggers who ran at a slow pace enjoyed a lower mortality rate than non-joggers, while speedier runners didn’t live longer than their non-running counterparts. (5) So on your next run, slow down and smell the roses.

And don’t forget about swimming! One study of more than 40,000 men between 20–90 years old found that those participants who swam or did other swim workouts like water jogging or aqua aerobics lowered their risk of dying from any cause by nearly 50 percent than those men who were sedentary, walked regularly or were runners. (5b)

#4. Occasional Fasting

I’ve long been a fan of intermittent fasting. It’s a terrific way to lose weight, increase insulin sensitivity and lowering bad cholesterol levels. But researchers think it’s actually a life extender. The idea is that when the body isn’t busy digesting food or trying to eliminate toxins and, instead, goes into a fasting state, it “switches off” and lets cells repair themselves and create new stem cells.

A 2015 study reported that fasting periodically — they recommend reducing calorie counts five days once a month — made an impact that lasted for up to six months after the fast. They found that biomarkers for cancer, aging, diabetes and cardiovascular disease all decreased after fasting. (6)

Luckily, there are intermittent fasting benefits for shorter periods of time, too. Women might also want to try a modified, intermittent fasting for women version to ensure your hormones don’t go out of whack.

#5. Keep Moving After Work

If you’re sitting at your desk all day, it could be as harmful as going out for cigarette breaks. (7) Luckily, you can combat the negative effects of sitting all day by exercising daily. If your workday is largely sedentary, adding an hour of moderate physical activity outside work hours can cancel out the increased risk of death that comes with not moving throughout the day.

You might be wondering where you’ll find an extra hour in your day. Luckily, the movements are cumulative, so a few minutes here and there of extra movement throughout the day can really add up. I’m also a fan of walking meetings and getting up and going to talk to people instead of sending another email. I also enjoy using a productivity apps like Pomodoro or Productivity Challenge Timer.

Here, you work for 25 minute stretches and then take a 5-minute break. Not only does it help with making sure I stay on the task at hand, it’s a handy reminder to get up and move nearly every half hour. If you really want to keep active during the day, you can also invest in a treadmill workstation to help get standing desk benefits with the added bonus of extra steps. Even standing desks alone have been found to lower the risk of chronic disease and act as a life extender.

#6. Stop Watching So Much TV!

Netflix and chill might be killing you. Similar to sitting too much during the day, watching hours of television means you’re likely sprawled on the couch and remaining sedentary. People who watched TV for three or more hours a night doubled than risk of early death when compared to people who watched an hour or less of TV. (8) Another study found that watching more than five hours of TV a day increased the risk of dying from a blood clot in the lung. (9)

If you find yourself binge watching series often, it’s probably time to put a limit on the amount of television you’re consuming, or at least make sure you keep moving while watching. Give yourself a circuit to do while catching your favorite shows, like push-ups, crunches, squats and lunges, or keep the TV on in the background while you do something more active, like cook dinner.

#7. Surround Yourself with Friends

Friends and family might drive you nuts sometimes, but they could be helping you live longer. The Harvard Happiness Study found that strong, meaningful social connections and relationships are the keys to happy lives. It makes sense, since people who are lonely or isolated have a higher risk of death than those with a strong social network. (10) If your friends live far away, though, using Facebook or other social networks to stay connected can be a powerful life extender.

A study found that people on Facebook are 12 percent less likely to die than those who aren’t on the network. And when people used the site to strengthen offline relationships, by posting a message or writing on a wall, for example, they increased their longevity.

It could be because connecting with people online increases a person’s perception of their social support network, which helps lower stress, even when you’re busy battling FOMO. So keep posting photos and keeping tabs on friends online!

#8. Be a Lifelong Learner

For some people, life extenders are natural: smart people live longer. It’s not just that smarter people make better choices, but that their genes actually support a longer lifespan. (11) But if you don’t have an off-the-charts IQ, visiting the local library might help.

One study used data on over 3,600 people and found that book readers, on average, lived almost two years longer than people who didn’t read any books. (12) Those who read up to 3.5 hours a week were 17 percent less likely to die over the course of the 12 years participants were tracked; those who read more were 22 percent less likely to die. A longer life in which to read fantastic stories? Sign me up!

#9. Eat Hot Peppers!

Adding a little spice to your life could help you live longer. It turns out that eating certain peppers impacts your death risk, lowering your risk of death by 13 percent. (13) Though researchers haven’t been able to figure out exactly what it is about hot peppers that make them life extenders, so far all signs point to capsaicin, the active ingredient in the vegetables. It’s an antimicrobial, so the capsaicin in peppers is likely fighting against bacteria and helping to keep us healthy.

Try adding hot peppers to your meals to enjoy some heat and add some time to your life.

#10. Volunteer

Giving back feels good, but it could also be helping you live longer. One study out of the University of Michigan found that folks who volunteer with selfless motivations live longer than people who don’t volunteer. (14) Interestingly, though, people who volunteered for self-motivated reasons — “it helps me feel good” or “it’ll look good on my resume” — don’t get the same life extender benefits.

In the group of 2,384 non-volunteers, 4.3 percent died, though only 1.6 percent of altruistic volunteers did. Self-motivated volunteers died at levels similar to non-volunteers (4 percent). It’s fascinating to think that our bodies know if we’re doing something to be helpful or to just help ourselves.

For many people, though, a volunteering gig that might have started as a self-motivated event can often turn into something more meaningful, as they start to see the impact of their work. Getting involved in your local community is also a great way to meet new people and create new friendships, which play their own role in helping us live longer.

#11. Go to Church

If you’re of a certain religion, attending religious services be a powerful life extender. A study on almost 75,000 women over 20 years found that those who went to church more than once a week had a 33 percent lower risk of dying than those who never attended services. (15) And even those who went just once a week or didn’t go weekly but still attended at times saw benefits, as they lowered their risk by 26 percent and 13 percent, respectively.

Unfortunately, researchers weren’t able to pinpoint exactly what it is about attending services that makes church a life extender. But it’s easy to imagine that having a strong support system in place, and maybe even a sense of purpose in life (along with opportunities like volunteering), could play a role. Because most of the women in the study were Protestant or Catholic, the authors also are unable to say whether the same results would hold true for other Christian denominations or religions.

Final Thoughts on Natural Life Extenders

  • There are relatively simple, natural ways to increase your odds of living longer.
  • Some of these include strength training and aerobic exercise. When looking at certain activities, raquet sports seemed to lower the risk of death most significantly.
  • Running at a slower pace decreases your risk of death, but one Danish study found that fast runners didn’t live any longer than their non-running counterparts.
  • People who follow the he Mediterranean, Okinawa or Blue Zones diet tend to live longer, but intermittent fasting can also increase your longevity, studies show.
  • Social and spiritual connection seem to have powerful life-extending qualities.

The #1 "bodyfat-eating" hormone...

weight loss solvedTo begin, I apologize for the dark nature of today's email.

However I promise what you'll discover today will be completely worth it.

Imagine a rotting corpse draped over your body from head to toe...

...suffocating tissue, restricting blood flow, damaging joints and infecting your healthy cells.

Shockingly, that nightmare is a reality for most:

64% of women and 74% of men carry too much body fat according to the National Institutes of Health.

It's choking their organs, assaulting their metabolism and sucking their energy dry.

But here's the worst part:

For most, this bodyfat has become "calorie-resistant":

It's completely unaffected by even the strictest diets... and most intense exercises.

This zombie fat is essentially... "dead tissue".

That's important for those who have 10, 25 or 50 or more pounds to lose...

AND for those who aren't technically overweight, but have what's called "pocket obesity"...

...unsightly patches of fat that cling to specific places, like:

just above your hips, lower belly, where your butt and legs meet... and even arms, neck and face.

However, there's good news:

Obesity researchers have now discovered a "metabolic jumper cable":

It jolts dead bodyfat back to life.

This allows your metabolism to burn it as calories and re-energize your entire body.

First though, here's the #1 reason why bodyfat becomes calorie-resistant:

It lacks blood flow. This has 3 effects:

  1. Not enough oxygen or nutrients reach fat cells, so they become unresponsive..
  2. Released fat can't be sent to other tissues to be burned, so fat cells suck it back in...
  3. 3) Metabolic hormones carrying the "burn calories" message don't reach the fat cell...

All this means one thing:

Your body can't transform into energy, the 135,000+ of calories the average person stores as fat!

You become a metabolic zombie: NO energy to think. NO energy to move. NO energy to motivate.

Update: calorie-resistant bodyfat can be now removed...

The discovery of this "metabolic jumper cable" can now reverse this process:

  • It wakes up un-responsive bodyfat with a powerful calorie-burning hormonal jolt....
  • It pops open fat cells, sucks out the fat, sending it off before its yanked back in...
  • It shuttles fat to your brain, heart, lungs, kidneys - even your bones - to be burned as energy.

Not only do those layers of "zombie fat" start coming off, but your entire body just works better.

Plus, as your whole body burns more calories, those patches of pocket obesity whittle away.

This "metabolic jumper cable" isn't any exercise, machine or pill.

It's a little-known, calorie-burning hormone we all have... just waiting for the right spark to come alive.

It's not thyroid, leptin, ghrelin, insulin, adiponectin, HGH or any other "fat loss" hormone you may know.

And on this next page, you'll find out precisely how to unleash its calorie-burning power:

==> How to Activate Your #1 "Bodyfat-Eating" Hormone...

How to Activate Your #1 "Bodyfat-Eating" Hormone

PS - Studies show that not only can healthy levels of this powerful calorie-burning hormone devour bodyfat and fortify soft muscle, but it can also reduce your risk of diabetes by 53.7%, a heart attack by 83.3% and stroke by 51.4%. Here's more of the scientific proof...

How to Wipe Out Chronic Inflammation (Free Book)

The 5 Most Dangerous Lies You’ve Been Told About Bread

breads-email-small

Is Bread Really the Staff of Life… or the Stuff of Disease?

For most us, there are few foods more comforting than bread.

Fluffy biscuits, crusty baguettes, flaky croissants… even a simple slice of toast topped with melted butter can taste like heaven.

And that smell… few scents are quite as pleasant as fresh bread baking in the oven.

But there is a lot of confusion as to where bread fits into a healthy diet.

The Bible practically commands followers to eat it: “Give us this day our daily bread…” The government put it at the base of the food pyramid. And for centuries, it has been called “the staff of life.”

Of course, there are some who disagree…

Well-known cardiologist, Dr. William Davis, calls wheat “the perfect chronic poison.”

And for a poison, we sure eat lots of it…

The average American consumes 55 pounds of wheat flour every year, making refined flour the #1 source of calories in the American Diet – a situation that nutrition expert Chris Kresser describes as, “a public health catastrophe.”

So, what is the truth about bread and wheat?

  • Is it the perfect poison… or an essential daily food?
  • Is “gluten-free” bread better for you than regular bread?
  • And can you still eat bread… while maintaining a lean body and optimal health?

The answers to these questions may surprise you!

You probably know most of us eat too much processed food. What you may not know is that it’s full of toxic chemicals and substandard, dirt-cheap ingredients designed to make you eat more…and force you to gain weight.

Here’s how it works.

“That stuff is just a lot of calories your body can’t use,” Liz told me, “Some are poison. And all these foods are stripped of the anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatories that help your body detox. The result? Your body expends huge amounts of calories to eliminate some toxins—the rest, it stores in your fat to protect you. This is why most people are hungry all the time. They’re not getting energy they need.”

“So… what’s going on with me? Why am I losing weight but not going hungry?”

Liz paused, then dropped the bombshell.

Your body is designed to burn fat. You just have to let it.

“What? I thought we were designed to store fat?!?” We were Skyping and I was practically shouting. Then I heard Liz say…

What good is a fat reserve if you can’t burn it?

Mind blown.

Liz continued: “You’re drinking smoothies packed with phytonutrients, anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatories that pull toxins out of you like a tractor beam. Allowing your body to burn those toxin-filled fat stores… and releasing tremendous amounts of stored energy.”

So that’s why I’m losing weight without going hungry.
