How to Grow a 100-Year-Old Forest in Your Backyard In Just 10 Years

My favorite part about camping is waking up each morning to breathe in fresh air, hear the birds sing and the squirrels scurry, and then open my eyes to see a beautiful, evergreen forest towering over me. There’s something about it that just makes you feel like a Disney princess, and environmental engineers are working to recreate these fairytale forests in our own backyards.

Shubendu Sharma and his team create small, unique forests using only local plant species that can thrive in that area. As an industrial engineer with specialty in cars, Sharma has seen elements taken from nature to be refined and restructured, often irreversibly, in order to make new products that can never be recycled into the environment.

Beautiful, miniature forests are custom-designed by Sharma’s team, and can be built for specific purposes such as bearing fruit or attracting biodiversity. The mini-forests can be grown anywhere, from factories and apartment buildings to schools, zoos, and even your own backyard.

By working with nature rather than against it, forests can be seamlessly integrated into the modern, urbanized lifestyle that has led to their destruction. The environmental impact of small plant projects such as these could be a huge step in the right direction towards making amends for all of the environmental destruction that development and deforestation has caused.

How To Build Your Own Forest

Every element of these miniature forests is harvested from the surrounding environment and strategically arranged to create a self-sustaining forest. This ensures that what grows will be perfectly adapted to the climate.

Step 1: Get Your Hands Dirty

The team begins by analyzing the properties of the soil, getting a feel for which nutrients the soil has and lacks, as well as checking consistency and texture. If the soil is too dense, it is mixed with nearby biomass (fallen leaves, plant matter, etc.) until it is loose enough for water to penetrate the surface. What the soil lacks in nutrition is re-introduced by microorganisms that eat the plant matter in the soil and produce nutrients naturally, and as they multiply they excrete abundant nutrients to protect the sustainability of the soil. A special layer of mulch is put over the soil to lock in moisture and protect the plants in harsh climates. The soft soil promotes rapid root growth that has forests springing up from the ground.

Step 2: Pick Your Plants

Once they’ve selected the indigenous species they want to plant, Sharma’s team separates them into 4 categories (in ascending height order, shrub layer, sub-tree layer, tree layer, and canopy layer).

The different sizes of plants are then strategically staggered so that no two of the same type have to compete for vertical space as they grow. This guarantees a full, healthy forest.

Step 3: Let Nature Take Over

As the trees get tall, they begin to block the sunlight so that the weeds on the forest floor can’t survive, and manual weeding is no longer necessary. The dense forest will grow more quickly than independent plants because the close proximity causes the forest to retain nearly 100% of the water it absorbs from precipitation during peak growth as well as benefit from microorganisms and their nutritious excrement.

This ideal foundation means you can grow a thriving, “100-year-old” forest in just 10 years, right in your own backyard.
