Every season has its ups and downs, even the most anticipated of them all: summer. Mosquitoes can turn a leisurely day into a nightmare as a slew of them attack you from head-to-toe. Even one single bite can leave you itching and in discomfort for days. On the market since 1956, mosquito repellent is the go-to for steering clear of these annoying insects.
But walking around smelling like chemicals isn’t ideal, nor is subjecting yourself to the adverse effects of DEET in sprays. Truly, the whole experience is a lose-lose situation. For me, I feel like I’m always the one who gets put under attack every time the mosquitoes come out, leaving me with two choices: to douse myself in spray or deal with it. I’ll tell you right now, there’s no “dealing” with it. I simply end up running indoors to the safety of a mosquito-free environment.

Also known as thiamine, Vitamin B1 is an essential vitamin your body requires. Found in foods like yeast, oatmeal, brown rice, asparagus, kale, liver and eggs, it works to fight off stress and improve immunity.
It’s How You Smell…
As far as using Vitamin B1 for repelling mosquitoes, it has the ability to change the way you smell to them, as people with enough of the vitamin in their system can smell “yeasty” to the buggers, which is an unappealing aroma for them to sink their fangs into. But don’t worry! You won’t have people at the party saying, “Wow, something smells super yeasty!” because it doesn’t change the way you smell to other humans.
While research on this is still inconclusive, it’s worth a try, since there are no adverse side effects to take thiamin every day. And for anyone suffering from lower thiamine in the body—like those with chronic alcoholism, Crohn’s disease, anorexia and gastric bypass already, it may prove to be a win-win.
To give it a go, try taking 100 mg of thiamin every day. After two weeks time, you should notice a decrease in bites by mosquitoes.

And if taking thiamine isn’t in the cards for you, opt for this all-natural mosquito repellent recipe, so you don’t subject yourself to the downsides of DEET.
All Natural Mosquito Repellent
- Tea tree oil
- Lavender oil
- Witch hazel
- Cooled boiled water
- Fill an 8oz. spray bottle halfway with boiled water (allow it to cool down first!)
- Add ½ tsp of witch hazel
- Add 15 drops of tea tree oil
- Add 15 drops of lavender oil
- Use as needed
