The only place in the world that natural Rooibos (pronounced Roy-bos) grows is in a small mountainous area in the Western Cape province of South Africa.
The leaves have been brewed by locals (Bush tea) for centuries and more recently exported in added to tea blends, most popular in Germany and Great Britain (where its often called red bush tea). Though technically not a tea, Rooibus leafs are usually oxidized the same as black tea and often prepared the same as tea with milk and honey. It is also often blended with tea leaf by commercial retailers.
Though originally consumed by Dutch settlers in the 18th century as a sort of a “tea alternative” (due to the high price of tea in South Africa during that time), today we know Rooibos can be a very effective natural weight loss supplement. Rooibos contains flavonoids and phytochemicls that can boost your metabolism and help shed those unwanted extra pounds. Rooibus tea does not contain caffeine but provides a natural energy charge while providing unique antioxidants called asplathin and nothofagin (found only in Rooibus) which help protect us from the harmful effects of free radicals.
Rooibos Tea and Weight Loss
South African researchers, studying how the nutrients found in Rooibos can help in the fight against obesity (findings were published in Phytomedicine: International Journal of Phytotherapy and Phytopharmacology), concluded that regular consumption of Rooibos causes increased leptin (a hormone associated with decreasing hunger sensations) secretion. The researchers also added that Rooibos seems to help reduce the production of new fat cells while causing existing fat cells to metabolize faster.
Rooibos Tea and Liver Disease
Other scientific studies in rats have concluded that Rooibos can be beneficial for individuals with Liver Disease. When rats receiving water were compared to those receiving Rooibos supplements, researchers noticed less fibrotic tissue in the livers of rats who consumed Rooibos verse those that did not. Thus, researchers concluded that Rooibos can be used both in the prevention of Liver Disease as well as included as an adjuvant in the treatment of Liver Disease.
Rooibos Tea and Cancer
Additionally, due to its high level of antioxidants, Rooibos has been linked to a reduction of cancer causing chemicals in the body that cause the DNA of cells to mutate into cancerous cells. This means that they defend cells & DNA against damage and inhibit them from developing into cancer.
