Scientists at the University of Southern California (USC) have shown that a three-day fast can have “remarkable” positive effects on your immune system, no matter your age, The Telegraph reports. The fast causes your stem cells to create new white blood cells, thus regenerating your immune system. The findings are particularly pertinent for the elderly or those who are already suffering from poor immunity, such as cancer patients on chemotherapy.
Powerful antiaging strategy
I’m excited about this news, as I believe fasting can be a significant antiaging strategy, switching on your body’s ability to promote cellular protection, regeneration and rejuvenation. I’m particularly enthusiastic when it comes to something called the “fasting mimicking diet,” developed by Valter Longo and his team at USC’s Longevity Institute — the same team that released the latest news on fasting and immunity.
Longo’s diet was developed to produce the same health benefits as water fasting, while making it safer and easier to comply with the restrictions of a fast. In short, this fasting mimicking diet lowers inflammation and inflammatory diseases, and reduces cancers by nearly 50 percent. Cognition and immune function are also improved while, overall, the diet reduces risk factors for diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer, and improves markers for aging. It’s also interesting that Longo was one of the first researchers to identify sugar as an aging accelerator.
Are you eating too much protein?
Like me, Longo promotes radically reduced protein consumption. I’ve often warned that most Americans eat far too much protein for optimal health. Longo recommends limiting protein to 0.31 to 0.36 grams of protein per pound of body weight. For most, that would mean cutting down their protein consumption by about two-thirds. If you weigh 150 pounds, you’d need just 50 grams of protein a day. My book, “Fat for Fuel,” goes in to great detail on how to balance your diet in such a way that, combined with intermittent fasting, you can minimize cravings and hunger pangs, normalize insulin and leptin sensitivity and teach your body to burn fat for fuel.
Will you try fasting?
Personally, while I was initially hesitant, I now believe multiday water fasting is one of the most powerful metabolic interventions out there, although it bears mentioning that Longo’s fasting mimicking diet is not a water-only fast. Longo’s diet involves restricting your calories to 800 to 1,100 calories per day for five days each month, opposed to no-calorie fasting. It was primarily developed to improve compliance, as many find a five-day water-only fast to be too difficult. The low-calorie strategy also helps reduce the likelihood of adverse side effects, while retaining the benefits.
