For most enthusiastic coffee drinkers, that process of climbing out of bed, filling the pot, then brewing, waiting, and inhaling, is sort of like a morning custom, a wake-up routine for your body and your mind. Coffee lovers gather strength in those aromatic morning moments, strength that will get them through a day of countless tasks and activities. Pouring their coffee into a stout, earthenware mug is as reassuring as a band of preppy cheerleaders, giving them the pep to start their day. But after the coffee is poured and every drop is drunk, how do they go about cleaning up?
While it might be obvious that you won’t pour leftover coffee grounds down your sink drain, for fear of causing a clog, how do you usually dispose of them? If it’s in the garbage, you’re missing a golden opportunity — 7 to be exact. Coffee grounds might be best for making coffee, but after that’s done, they’re great for some other things as well! Here’s why you should be reusing those grounds once you’ve had your morning pick-me-up:
The most popular way to reuse coffee grounds is adding it to your compost pile.
Composting is a great way to reuse your food scraps and garden clippings, and mixing up the right concoction can be your ticket to a thriving, healthy home garden.
Compost is great for adding to the soil of both your vegetable garden and your flower beds.
If you don’t already have one, here’s an easy how-to, to get you started on your own compost pile or bucket. If you’ve already got your finished compost mixture, take it a step further, by making your own compost tea.
If you don’t feel up to the whole compost commitment (really though, it’s not as hard as you think), this trick is a great way to make use of that leftover Joe anyway.
If you love the smell of coffee, this little hack is a real treat for you.
Open up a K-Cup or pull out a filter full of grounds, and grab a sizable handful. Then, just scrub it well over your hands, getting between your fingers, and focusing on specifically rough patches.
If you’re trying to get rid of chopped onion or garlic smell from your fingertips, scrubbing with coffee grounds will eradicate those odors completely!
Simply rub the grains between your fingertips, palms, and anywhere else that touched the offending veggies. Try the same method for scrubbing the knife and cutting board you used.
When you’re finally finished with them, brush the grains off into your compost bin or garbage, and rinse your hands. Try to avoid getting too many grains in the sink (clogs are not our friends).
Natural Pest Control
You know who doesn’t share your love for coffee? Ants.
Dry out your used coffee grounds, and then sprinkle some around an area you think might be ant-attractive.
Add a protective border around your flower bed and veggie garden to scare off slugs (and enrich the soil).
Coffee doesn’t only carry a pleasant aroma, it can actually be used to neutralize other odors, just like baking soda.
Put a small bowl of coffee grounds in your refrigerator, to rid it of stale or rotten lingering scents, or place a pretty container of it in your kitchen, to refresh the air after cooking.
If you’re feeling crafty, try a coffee candle DIY, and add some grounds to a candle making kit, so that the sweet smell is amplified and spreads throughout your home.
(Disclaimer: Don’t be surprised if this leads to more coffee drinking!)
To stain both wood and concrete, use your leftover coffee grounds and some vinegar, to create a concentrated, dark mixture, which you can then brush onto your surface. For best results, let the mixture sit in a closed container for about two days before use. Add more coats for a darker stain.
Who knew coffee could get even better? Now, not only is coffee delicious, beneficial to your health, and the perfect way to kick off your day, it’s also a household helper and gardening gold. Remember that, the next time you brew yourself a cup. Like right now, maybe?
