4 Top Symptoms of Zika Virus! Don’t Ignore These…

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions (CDC), as of August 10th, 2016, there have been 1,962 cases of Zika Virus infection reported in the United States and D.C., 510 of which have infected pregnant women, the group most in danger of Zika.

The Zika Virus has caught national media attention since the virus spread from Brazil to Miami, FL. The virus is transmitted by mosquitoes, giving everyone one more reason to loathe them, as if we didn’t have enough already.


Pay Attention if You Notice These 4 Symptoms

  1. Fever. While this may not indicate Zika Virus on it’s own, it is often the first symptom felt by people infected with many mosquito-transmitted diseases such as malaria or dengue.
  2. Rash spreading from the face. The Zika rash is a pretty typical rash. If you notice itchy, red bumps spreading from your face, you might want to think about how recently you were around mosquitoes.
  3. Red eyes. If your eyes become bloodshot, this could be a sign of Zika infection, especially if accompanied by a headache of concentrated pressure around the eyes.
  4. Pain in your joints. Many Zika patients have reported feeling intense pain in their joints, body aches, and fatigue.

How is Zika Virus dangerous?

Adults infected with the Zika Virus are not typically considered high-risk. In most cases, doctors recommend the typical flu recovery recipe, plenty of rest and fluids, over hospitalization. Of course, if symptoms are severe, it is best to seek medical attention immediately. Adults should also avoid sex, travel, and places with elevated mosquito activity in order to minimize the risk of transmission.

The real danger is the virus’ spread to pregnant women. The primary risk of the virus is causing microcephaly in a developing fetus. According to the CDC,

“A pregnant woman can pass Zika virus to her fetus during pregnancy. Zika is a cause of microcephaly and other severe fetal brain defects. We are studying the full range of other potential health problems that Zika virus infection during pregnancy may cause.”

The CDC doesn’t provide much detail into the potential for other birth defects. Zika virus has been linked to seizures, slow development, feeding problems, and in some cases, stillbirth. If you or your partner may be infected with Zika virus and are expecting a baby or trying to conceive, it is imperative that you get medical assistance as soon as possible.

Protect Yourself!

If avoiding highly mosquito-populated areas simply isn’t possible for you, these tips could help you protect yourself from mosquito bites that could lead to the transmission of Zika virus.

1. Take a Vitamin B1 (Thiamin) supplement, or eat plenty of sunflower seeds, macadamia nuts and green peas. 

Vitamin B1 gives your body a “yeasty” smell that repels mosquitoes (don’t worry, people can’t smell it), and makes you less susceptible to bites.

2. Use bug repellent. 

I like to use a homemade bug repellent, because they’re inexpensive to make in large quantities and much safer than store-bought sprays that can contain harmful chemicals (this is especially important if you’re pregnant or trying to conceive).

Here’s a simple recipe for a very effective, all-natural bug repellent. This recipe has a strong smell when wet but should fade as it dries.

You’ll need:

2 tbsp each of Dried Sage, Rosemary, Lavender, Thyme and Mint

1 32 oz. bottle of Apple Cider Vinegar

A 32 oz. glass jar with an airtight lid

All you do is:

  1. Mix together all ingredients in jar and seal with airtight lid. Place it somewhere that you’ll see it everyday.
  2. Shake thoroughly everyday for 2-3 weeks.
  3. After 2-3 weeks, strain out the herbs and pour the mixture into spray bottles and refrigerate.
  4. If you want to apply directly to your skin, dilute the mixture with 50% water and pour into a spray bottle.

3. Use condoms.

Zika virus can be sexually transmitted between partners. There are many, many reasons you should use condoms, but if you’re in a mosquito-infested area and therefore at higher risk for Zika, this could save you and/or your partner from potential infection.
