A study by Carlos Monteiro and his team at the University of Sao Paolo recently revealed that about 60% of the average U.S. citizen’s daily calories come from highly processed foods… and only 1% from vegetables. They defined highly processed foods as any foods containing sweeteners, hydrogenated oils, emulsifiers, flavors, dyes, etc.
It’s no secret that a high-calorie diet full of junk food and sugary treats is a one-way ticket to obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.
If your diet is very reliant on processed foods that are stripped of nutrients that are substituted with tasty chemicals, it’s very possible to be fat and simultaneously poorly nourished.
To eliminate processed junk and center your diet around whole foods that are great for your taste buds AND your body…
Ditch foods that contain:
1. Any ingredients you wouldn’t find in an average home kitchen.
Odds are, you won’t find emulsifiers, dyes, and additives (lookin’ at you, “natural and artificial” flavoring) in your kitchen or sold independently for cooking in the grocery store. Synthetic chemicals aren’t meant to be cooked into your food, but are often added for preservation, color, and flavoring. You can add plenty of color and flavor to your food using organic ingredients that don’t threaten your health.
2. Refined sugars.
While we’re all guilty of indulging in sweets every now and then, it’s no secret that consuming tons of sugar is unhealthy and often unflattering (I can’t be the only one who has packed on a few extra pounds over the holidays from Grandma’s shortbread cookies and Mom’s chocolate toffee.) Indulging in sweets made with natural sugars every now and again is nothing to fear, however, the refined (chemically processed) sugars that are added to nearly every food on the shelf at the grocery store can have serious health consequences.
Refined sugars such as high fructose corn syrup, maltodextrin, and a litany of others are often found in low-fat foods or low-calorie beverages in order to add more flavor. They may knock off a few extra calories, but they come with their fair share of risks. In fact, according to Dr. Edward Group at the Global Healing Center,
“Free sugar, meaning sugar that isn’t bound to fiber in fruit, can lead to inflammation, blood sugar instability, and, over a period of time, type 2 diabetes.”
PS- I highly recommend Dr. Mercola’s book “Sweet Deception: Why Splenda, NutraSweet, and the FDA May Be Hazardous to Your Health” to anyone who is curious about refined sugars or has faith in the FDA’s ability to protect consumers.
3. Refined grains.
Most people I’ve discussed the matter with seem to have a vague idea that whole grains are healthier for you, but don’t understand what the difference is between a refined and whole grain.
The whole, natural wheat berry has three parts, the germ, the endosperm, and the bran. When the grain is “refined,” it is processed to strip the wheat berry of the nutritious components, the germ and the bran, leaving just the high-calorie and low-nutrient endosperm. They are all ground up to make the white flour you’ve probably grown up eating in most of your starchy, high-carbohydrate products.
If you’re going to cash in your calories on a piece of cake, a cookie, or even that new pasta recipe that you saw on Pinterest, why not get at least some nutritional value along with it?
4. Artificial dyes and other additives.
It goes without saying that these products aren’t natural, and foreign, man-made chemicals simply aren’t going to agree with the human body in the same way that whole, organic foods will. There’s a reason our ancestors were able to thrive without additives for nearly all of human history by eating whole foods. I’ve always been a big fan of the saying “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
Chemicals like sodium benzoate and dyes such as Red 2 can cause a long list of health problems from hyperactivity and behavioral problems in children to elevated risk for specific cancers. Red 2 is legally categorized by the FDA as a a carcinogen, and is still allowed to be put in your food. As consumers, we allow this to continue by establishing demand for these products. We can flip the corporate food system together and demand changes by using our voices as consumers and constituents, it’s as simple as reading labels and making a phone call to your congressional representatives.
5. More than 10 ingredients.
If you can’t recall the names of ingredients to avoid while you’re out shopping, try this simple technique.
If there’s more than 10 ingredients, or you can’t pronounce the name of an ingredient, it’s probably best to make your own version at home. We live in the age of Pinterest boards and blogs full of healthy, whole recipes that you can access in seconds. If you hate cooking and can’t be bothered to try a recipe from scratch, you’re probably missing a few things from your kitchen.
Make sure along with delicious ingredients, your kitchen is full of music, helpful people you love, and of course good wine to share.

In April, 2009, researchers stunned the medical community when they reported chronic inflammation as the root cause of several major diseases.
See, every year 610,000 people in the U.S. die of heart disease. Cancer claims another 584,000...stroke 130,000...Alzheimer's disease nearly 85,000 — and the list goes on.
Truth is, we now know... chronic inflammation is responsible for 7 out of the top 10 leading causes of death in the United States! Hundreds of studies and scientific reviews prove it.
Fortunately, newer research shows you can prevent-even reverse-most major diseases by "turning off" inflammation. And in our new book, we show you how to do just that.
If you or a loved one is suffering from a debilitating condition-and you"re not sure what the culprit is-now's the time to find out...while you can still do something about it!

1) Everyone knows green smoothies are healthy right? Have you heard of a “red” smoothie? If not, check out this story…
2) Forget what you've read about 10-day lemonade cleanses, 7-day detoxes with green juices and Gwyneth's gruel. All you need to do, and this is perfect for Saturday or or anytime really, is a simple 1-day cleanse.
3) This “hidden survival muscle” in your body will boost your energy levels, immune system, sexual function, strength and athletic performance when unlocked.
4) I thought it was virtually impossible for a website to be able to tell me anything even a little bit insightful after only submitting my name and date of birth... I was wrong!
5) Turmeric is amazing. The problem is - It's hard to absorb!
6) Wonder why your stomach still sticks out even though you're hammering the core exercises every day? It's a common myth that bulging belly is due to weak abdominal muscles.
7) Even if you're the most active of athletes, you may still suffer from tight hip flexors due to the amount of time you spend each day planted to a chair.
Enjoy! Let me know how these work out for you. And if you run across anything I've missed please let me know.
