A shocking new investigation into an old, little talked about subject has revealed that far more than half of America’s drinking water contains radioactive compounds, such as radium and chromium-6.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) quantified what many independent investigators have been proving for years, and announced that a sizeable portion of tap water in all 50 US states contains cancer-causing radioactive compounds.
Radioactive compounds exceed regulations
The EWG reports that they analyzed nearly 50,000 public water facilities and found that the tap water consumed and bathed in by about 170 million Americans contains the radioactive compounds. In 27 states, the radioactive compounds exceeded regulations imposed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA).
Radium was apparently the most common radioactive element, but if people have been paying attention, they’d know chromium-6 mostly from U.S. Air Force bases contaminates water all over America. Radium was probably the most common element found because radium naturally enters the groundwater through its deposits in Earth’s crust.
However unnatural, activities such as fracking or oil drilling disturbs the deposits, and releases ions, “ionizing” and polluting what ends up being the groundwater. The EPA of course categorizes all ionized radiation as carcinogenic, and safe levels are set, which probably are too high for safety in the first place.
Other harmful compounds present as well
Additionally, other compounds present in municipal water such as sodium fluorosilicate and hydrofluorosilicic acid are known to cause cancer and lower IQ. An array of harmful and cancer-causing chemicals are present in drinking water all over the United States.
A study conducted between 2010 and 2015 discovered that about 122 million people are consuming tap water containing levels of radium above what is considered safe.
What the data shows
“What the data show are that many consumers are receiving finished drinking water (tap water) that has radium above the levels set by the federal government,” Scott Faber, vice president of government affairs at EWG, told Newsweek. “And many more Americans are receiving finished tap water with radiological elements above the level scientists have deemed safe.”
“There’s a difference between safe and legal, which is an important distinction,” he added.
The report found that 158 public water systems that serve 276,000 Americans in 27 states had radium above the federal legal limit, according to Alexis Temkin, a toxicologist at the non-profit. Around 38 percent of Americans, or 122 million people, had radium concentrations above California’s public health goals. Water serving 173 million Americans had traces of radium in their tap water, which was the most prevalent radioactive element the investigation found. California and Texas fared the worst, where 64 and 80 percent of residents had radium in their drinking water, respectively.
The EWG warned:
“Most radioactive elements in tap water come from natural sources, but that doesn’t take away the need to protect people through stronger standards and better water treatment,” Olga Naidenko, senior science adviser at EWG, said in a statement. “Millions of Americans are drinking water with potentially harmful levels of radioactive elements, but the outdated federal standards mean many people don’t know about the risk they face when they turn on the tap.”
