DIY: Ditch Tide And Make Your Own Laundry Detergent.

Editor’s Note: Borax is not the evil, toxic ingredient that a lot of online resources make it out to be. This article provides a thorough examination of the difference between borax and boric acid, and why borax is not as harmful as you may have been told.

It’s no secret that soaps and detergents can be slathered in chemicals that we in turn cover our bodies with. It might make your clothing smell like a fresh, dewey spring morning or the ocean (or whatever) but there are negative health effects ranging from skin irritation to carcinogenicity. Your laundry room may actually be one of the more toxic areas of your home! And you wear that soap on your skin when you put your clothes on. Gross! So what do you do? Buy environmentally friendly “green” laundry detergent? Honestly, it’s not much better and you’re going to be paying $10 – $15 dollars for one bottle.

Why not try making your own? It’s easy, it’s kind of fun, and you end up spending about $2.50 for a gallon of the stuff. Not only is it cheaper, but you don’t give up any of the quality. It’s great for removing stains and leaves clothing feeling soft and smelling fresh. Not like chemical fresh, but just clean.

So how do we do it? Let’s dive in. You will need:

  • Borax: $2.99 for a box.
  • Washing Soda: $2.99
  • 5.5 Oz Bar of Fels Naptha Soap: $0.95
  • Essential Oil

Note: Essential oil is optional. I don’t bother with it but I’m a guy. I don’t care if my clothes don’t smell like a fresh seaside field of lavender.

  • 5 Gallon Bucket.
  • Water.

Word to the wise: especially if you’re using a high efficiency washing machine, use a half cup or even less of this soap. The whole “fill the cap” nonsense that commercial detergents recommend is utter bullshit. There’s usually enough soap left over in our clothes from the last wash to wash again without adding more soap. Yeah, that’s how much stays on your clothing when you wash. So don’t overdo it. I’ve found that using too much of this soap leaves residues sometimes.

You can get these ingredients in most grocery stores and even online. Alright, let’s get down to making it.

Step 1: Grate your Fels Naptha soap. I use a cheese grater for this. Also when you wash it afterward, your cheese grater gets real clean. Just a perk.

Step 2: Add the soap to a half gallon of not quite boiling water. Medium heat works pretty well. You don’t want it to boil, otherwise it’ll get all sudsy and be a mess. Stir until completely mixed, usually around 10 minutes.

Step 3: Fill your 5 gallon bucket with four and a half gallons of hot tap water. Pour in the melted soap mixture, making it five gallons of water.

Step 4: Stir in 1 cup of borax and 1 cup of washing soda.

Step 5: It you’re opting to use the essential oil now’s the time. Add in .5 to 1 oz of oil, depending on how stinky fresh you want your detergent.

Step 6: Stir continuously until you’re confident that everything has been effectively mixed together. Snap on a lid and let it sit for a full 24 hours. In this time, it will gel and look a lot more like laundry detergent.

Personally, I love this stuff. It’s cheap, it’s effective, and I make it myself. I don’t need some goddamn corporation to do this kinda thing for me. Have you tried making this soap? Let us know what you think!
