Alyse Brautigam is a 22-year old from Hawaii that decided she would go braless for a year and to see what would happen.
She says the main reason for doing this is the same reason she does most things in her life- to try something new and challenge herself to see what she can learn from the experience. (She’s also experimented with juice cleanses, stopped wearing makeup and quit using deodorant for a year.)
The need for perfect boobs
Today’s society puts a lot of emphasis on conforming to certain “look” and how a woman’s breasts appear is big part of that. Here’s Alyse’s take on that:
I felt like I needed you know bigger boobs to look good and that’s something that I was conditioned into thinking and I’m sure if you’re watching this you’ve probably been conditioned into thinking that you’ve gotta have like these perfect boobs…
Well let me tell you your boobs are already perfect because they are natural- natural on your body. You don’t need to change the way that your chest look in any way shape or form…
Why I Don’t Wear a Bra
Alyse initially transformed form push-up style bras to sports bras. She felt that push up bras were very uncomfortable and the straps made indented lines in her shoulders.
After that she transitioned to no bra at all and know says she “cannot even imagine putting a bra back on”.
What about nipples?
One aspect of bras is that they usually hide your nipples. So without a bra, your nipples are obviously going to be more noticeable.
I really like Alyse’s response to that-
You’re weird like if our nipples get hard! Do we kind of shun away and not look at people’s nipples? Is it okay to look at their nipples?It’s like I know that’s out there and I know that’s kind of difficult to like jump over and just get past but you’ve got to do that because nipples are so natural! Just like fingers are natural and armpits are natural, nipples should not be sexualized in the way that they are. Men have nipples and women have nipples and it’s not something that you need to be concerned about- whether it shows or not. If they’re showing then perhaps your cold or perhaps you’re aroused but it’s nothing that you need to be embarrassed by. Be proud of it.
