8 Tips for Women to Lose Weight and Be The Fittest You

So I have to admit something-

The title of this post misleading. These tips are not just for women. These weight loss and fitness tips work for everyone!

1. Move!

There is not time like the present! Our friends at myprotein.com sum it up pretty well:

“The first step to starting your way on your fitness journey is to just get moving already! Stop saying “oh tomorrow” and “on Monday”, get up and get active TODAY! The chances are you will always find an excuse to why you don’t have time to exercise and by doing this your really only hurting yourself and extending the time it will take you to reach your goals. Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go for a 5 mile run straight from the sofa- start by even just taking regular walks before or after meals or even walking the dog. Whatever it is just get going!”

2. Lift Weights

Just sitting on your butt reading this, you’re burning calories—if you lift weights, that is. Your muscle mass largely determines your resting metabolic rate—how many calories you burn by just living and breathing. “The more muscle you have, the more energy your body expends,” says women’s strength expert Holly Perkins, CSCS. “Everything you do, from brushing your teeth, to sleeping, to checking Instagram, you’ll be burning more calories,” Perkins says.

3. Strengthen Your Core

“Core exercises train the muscles in your pelvis, lower back, hips and abdomen to work in harmony. This leads to better balance and stability, whether on the playing field or in daily activities. In fact, most sports and other physical activities depend on stable core muscles.”

4. Stretch (Especially Yoga and Pilates)

The need for flexibility increases as we age because muscles tighten, shorten and become more prone to injury. “Flexibility is the third pillar of fitness, next to cardiovascular conditioning and strength training,” says David Geier, director of sports medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. Flexibility can help your body reach its optimum fitness level, may play a role in injury prevention and, experts say, can even contribute to staving off arthritis and other serious illnesses.

The key to increasing flexibility is to hold stretches (no bouncing) for at least 10 to 15 seconds. Don’t hold your breath; focus on relaxing the muscles you are stretching on each exhalation. Many experts recommend yoga or Pilates as good ways to incorporate stretching into your regular routines.

5. Follow a Routine

Health experts say you should aim for at least 150 minutes of exercise a week (30 minutes a day, five times a week, for example), plus weight training at least twice a week. Can’t find room in your crazy schedule? Take a closer look. If you work too late to get to a gym, keep a set of weights at home. If you can’t do 30 minutes at once, break exercise sessions up into 10- or 15-minute bursts.

Your workout should be just as much a habit as brushing your teeth or eating breakfast. When it’s part of your routine, you won’t even have to think about it. In a few months, fitness can be a regular feature in your day.

6. Find a Friend to Workout With

The benefits of a workout buddy are endless. Here are a three valid reasons:

  • With a buddy it’s more fun, you’re going to do it more, stick with it longer and in the end you’ll get better results.
  • This person is counting on you to be on track with them. It makes you more accountable in regards to proper eating habits.
  • You’re planning your workouts in advance and making sure you are there for your buddy and for yourself.

7. Stop Comparing Yourself to Other People

The comparison trap is a self-sabotaging habit of judging ourselves against others we come into contact with; using external cues to measure our own self-worth, landing us in a self-defeating cycle of always coming up short and feeling like we’re never good enough, successful enough, or pretty enough.

For many of us, we can hardly be in a room with another woman for more than two minutes without making self-limiting assumptions about how she might be better than us. We compare everything from our appearance to career success, regardless of how much or how little we know about the person. And in this day and age, comparison is made so much more accessible with technology like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn—even if you logically know you’re seeing a filtered, Internet-friendly version of someone’s life, that doesn’t make the cycle of judging yourself any easier to keep in check.

8. Be Patient!

Remember- This process takes time! Even if you follow every step outined here to the “T”, there will be ups and downs, setbacks and victories.

Just be patient and don’t give up. Keep you eye on the prize, keep working at it and you’ll see solid results.
